THE BLESSINGS IN A BACKPACK PROGRAM

Blessings in a Backpack is a 501C (3) non-profit organization. This unique program is designed to provide weekend nourishment to children grades K-5 in Title 1 schools who qualify for the Federal Free and Reduced Meal Program. The program started within the Jefferson County Schools area in Louisville, Kentucky in 2005. Stan Curtis, the program founder, saw a need to help nourish the less fortunate children in our public school system, so that they could learn at the same rate as their classmates. By providing them with food over the weekend, it would increase the odds of educational success. Blessings in a Backpack started with three elementary schools in Kentucky and now serves over 50 schools across the nation.

Food is distributed through a network of volunteers and school officials on Fridays before the children leave for the weekend. The program serves children grades K-5 within Title 1 Elementary Public Schools. All students served are recipients of the national Free and Reduced Meal/Lunch program. Most of our recipients are in a household with a single parent or with parents who are classified as working poor, those individuals who are employed but don’t earn enough to make ends meet.

Our weekend backpacks include ready to eat food items: Fruit Roll Ups, Pop Tarts, Lemonade and other drink mix packs, Instant Noodles, Peanut Butter, Macaroni and Cheese, Rice, Beans, Granola, Pasta, Instant Potatoes, Dry Cereal, etc. All food choices are kid friendly. This means the food distributed is healthy, light in weight and easy for children of all ages to carry, easy to make, and non-perishable. We rely on private donors such as you to purchase this food, as well as supermarkets which give us a substantial discount.

A donation of just $80.00 feeds a child for an entire school year. Contributions are tax-deductible and qualify for a tax credit for food pantries and other food programs.

The Discriminating Diner:Gallagher’s Food and Spirits

There is a yet undiscovered little gem of a place called Gallagher’s that just opened in Nov 2011 that we felt we just had to go and check out. Gallagher’s is located on Fowler right next door to Old Time Pottery.  We really were not sure what to except as they had just opened. We were warmly greeted by the hostess who welcomed us and took us to our seats.

This establishment had once been a Beef O’Brady’s but they did a very nice job redecorating and making the atmosphere warm and welcoming. There are plenty of TV’s and they do have all the sport packages so one can watch their favorite teams.  While Gallagher’s is a pub with an Irish flare and not a sports bar it is a nice addition to be able to watch your favorite teams.

Our waiter “Jay” was friendly, attentive and answered all our questions regarding the menu items.  The menu offers many “Pub” favorites such as Shepherd’s Pie ($9.95), Corned Beef and Cabbage ($10.95) and Bangers and Mash ($8.95). They also have Irish Beef Stew, Irish Sliders, Pretzel Bread and a flat bread pizza with corned beef, sauerkraut, mozzarella cheese and Thousand Island dressing…very different! They offer sandwiches the likes of: Pastrami, Reuben, Meatloaf and 4 others. They offer 3 types of wrap sandwiches and 4 burger selections.

We settled on for starters the O’Mally’s Basket of Tumbleweeds ($4.95). This is a huge portion, easily enough for 4, of thinly sliced onions, fried and served with their “special sauce”. This sauce is a spicy mustard sauce for dipping and it is “hot”.  For our main we settled on the Wicklow Burger ($8.95) and the Gerti MacDowell’s Meatloaf ($9.95). The burger is huge, was cooked perfectly (Medium Rare as requested) and served with a side of some of the best tasting fries ever.  We asked Jay for some ketchup and mayo and were pleasantly surprised to receive a bottle of each instead of a small cup that is never more than enough for dipping 4 fries into.

The Meatloaf is served with red skinned mashed potatoes with Guinness gravy and a vegetable (broccoli). The portion is large except for the broccoli; they could add a bit more broccoli to the serving.  The meatloaf was a favorite for sure and has some very special ingredients they use to make it so flavorful. You will have to just try it and then ask them about their secret as I promised not to revel it. Everything was served hot and was full of vibrant flavors.  They only thing was as I said earlier the portion size of the broccoli. We were very impressed that for a newly opened restaurant that the food and service was excellent.

Many restaurants do not pay attention to the coffee they serve but as a coffee lover, there is nothing better than a fresh cup of good coffee to go along with dessert. They offer 3 choices and we shared the carrot cake which was excellent and served with some chocolate sauce as well.

Gallagher’s has many events such as Happy Hour daily from 3-7 PM, Monday night is Hospitality Night from 3 – close, Thursday is Ladies Night from 3 – close. Coming soon is Karoke on Friday nights and a “Yappy Hour” on Saturdays. They have daily, all day draft specials for $1. Each day a different draft is featured at this price. They have free Wi-Fi, and are pet friendly. They have outdoor seating on their patio for those who wish to bring their pets or smoke.

Overall Gallagher’s gets a thumbs up for our experience!  While they are still new, once this place is discovered I suspect we all will be waiting in line to get in. Gallagher’s is certainly a place you will want to go to and have a great meal in a warm, friendly and fun atmosphere.  When you visit them please tell them that you saw this review on What’s Up SWFL! Happy Dining!

Age-Related Macular Degeneration From Dr. Terry Tucker D.O.

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ADM) is the leading cause of severe vision loss in adults over age 50. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that 1.8 million people have AMD and another 7.3 million are at substantial risk for vision loss from AMD. Caucasians are at higher risk for developing AMD than other races. Women also develop AMD at an earlier age than men. This eye disease occurs when there are changes to the macula, a small portion of the retina that is located on the inside back layer of the eye. AMD is a loss of central vision that can occur in two forms: “dry” or atrophic and “wet” or exudative.

Most people with macular degeneration have the dry form, for which there is no known treatment. The less common wet form may respond to laser procedures, or drug treatments (injections) if diagnosed and treated early.

Some common symptoms are: a gradual loss of ability to see objects clearly, distorted vision, a gradual loss of color vision, and a dark or empty area appearing in the center of vision. If you experience any of these, contact your doctor of optometry immediately for a comprehensive examination. Central vision that is lost to macular degeneration cannot be restored. However, low vision devices, such as telescopic and microscopic lenses, can be prescribed to maximize existing vision.

Researchers have linked eye-friendly nutrients such as lutein/zeaxanthin, vitamin C, vitamin E, and zinc to reducing the risk of certain eye diseases, including macular degeneration. For more information on the importance of good nutrition and eye health, please see the diet and nutrition section.

Symptoms of AMD
Gradual loss of ability to see objects clearly
Objects appear distorted in shape. Straight lines look wavy or crooked.
Loss of clear color vision
A dark or empty area appears in the center of vision.

Powerful You! Year End Gathering

Come Celebrate the relationships we've made in 2011!!

Hi Ladies, I hope everyone is enjoying this very special time of the year!!! We have so much to celebrate and be grateful for! With the hope that you will be free to join us and the knowledge that there are just so many days open and available in December, we wanted to share the following with you so you can plan to join us on Wed, Dec 14 at our Year End Gathering! With that in mind, let's get to the details and our intentions to gather women that we've met along the way to Celebrate 2011, with only one intention in mind, to have fun!!!

Roe & I are so grateful to have met you and become friends in the process we call "Networking with a Heart!"  Whether its been over the years or just this year that we've formed a friendship, we want to come together and CELEBRATE all the good that comes from creating meaningful relationships!!!

Click here to read our Reviews and get a feel for what our meetings are like:

Come join us on Wednesday, December 14, 2011 ~ This gathering will be in lieu of our monthly meeting.

Please RSVP so we can plan accordingly!
Where ~ The Hilton Garden Inn 12600 University Drive (College & Summerlin)
When ~  5:30 pm Registration and Open Networking to 9:00 PM ~ Festivities begin at 6:00 pm
Cost ~  The cost to attend is our usual meeting cost $13.00 for Members and 1st Time Attendees
$28   Returning after your 1st time as a Non-Member
There will be assorted hot & cold appetizers, soft drinks, coffee & tea; all included in the cost.  There will be a cash bar for wine, beer & cocktails!

To spice things up and have some fun, we are going to have a Show & Tell... can you just imagine the laughs & probably tears, good ones that is! It's completely voluntary and is not required of you to participate. For those of you who want to participate:

Bring something that you would like to share so we can learn more about YOU, YOUR BUSINESS, YOUR PRODUCTS and YOUR SERVICES!  Anything goes (well, almost anything) so be brave and be ready to share YOURSELF with the group.  Examples:  an heirloom, a keepsake, a project you are working on, your favorite recipe, product samples, a childhood toy or anything that  you want to share the meaning/significance/importance the item has for you!!

In lieu of a Holiday gift exchange, we wanted to do something that would force our creativity and allow us to have some laughs! We are having what we call a Surprise Exchange! The "item" has to be handmade by you or someone you know, not a food product or not pre-packaged or commercialized in any way. It has to be creative, fun and a gift, no matter how big or small, that you would want it for yourself! As with all our meetings and get-togethers, this too is voluntary and is not required of you to participate! If you choose to join in on the fun, just bring an item to exchange! If you don't have a gift to exchange, you will not be able to participate. You can look on as we share the gifts and have some laughs! There is a twist that will create the laughs, so get ready to hold on to your gift once you pick it!!!

Last but certainly not least, please contact us if you would like to donate a Door Prize.  ALL Door Prizes will be raffled at the event with all the proceeds going directly to Summer Campbell to "Help Summer to Recover"  Based on the Thank You's we've received and the acknowledgement from our last donation, I am certain any help we offer will be greatly appreciated! Misty, Summer's cousin posted this on our PY! group page!  " Misty Day Gillam -  I just wanted to thank each and every one of you for your support & donations for my cousin Summer Campbell I gave her the envelope last week before she went out of town to visit her Father in Live Oak. It couldn't of came at a better time. You are all beautiful, powerful & amazing women! Love the Campbell & Day Family ♥"
